Listeria Outbreak: CDC Investigates Deli Meats

The CDC is looking into a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections, with 28 cases reported across 12 states. Sadly, two deaths have been confirmed—one in Illinois and one in New Jersey.

Key Points:
a. Infections: 28 people have been hospitalized. Of those interviewed, 16 out of 18 (89%) reported eating meats sliced at deli counters.
b. Investigation: Officials are trying to find out which deli meats might be contaminated. There’s no evidence linking prepackaged deli meats to this outbreak.

What You Should Do:
a. High-Risk Individuals: Avoid deli meats unless they are heated to 165°F or steaming hot.
b. Clean Surfaces: Make sure to clean your fridge and any surfaces that may have touched deli meats.
c. Seek Medical Help: If you feel sick after eating deli meats, contact your healthcare provider.

About Listeria:
Listeria can cause serious illness, especially for pregnant people, who may experience fever and muscle aches. Severe cases can lead to complications like miscarriage or serious infections in newborns.
