The Conclusion of an Extended Above-Average Run

St. Patrick’s Day in 2024: The Conclusion of an Extended Above-Average Run

As we approach St. Patrick’s Day in 2024, it marks the end of an extended period of above-average temperatures in our region. While we have enjoyed warmer weather recently, with a peak temperature of 33 degrees on February 28, the most recent instance of below-average temperatures occurred. However, today, that run of temperatures above 40 degrees comes to an end.

A Chilly Start to the Day

This morning, we are greeted with a chilly start. When factoring in wind chill values in the teens, the temperatures actually feel like they are in the mid- to upper-20s. It is likely that the early morning temperature will be the high for today, with an expected jump of around 10 degrees later in the day. Despite this, we can expect to feel cold this afternoon for two reasons.

Clouds and Limited Warming

Firstly, clouds are approaching, which will slow down our warming process, even if the rest of the day is generally sunny. Additionally, the northwesterly winds are not bringing in any warm air, further limiting our ability to heat up. While we have already witnessed several clouds flying around this morning, more are predicted to arrive later in the morning and potentially into the afternoon.

Although the winds are expected to gradually drop in the late evening and nighttime hours, they could still gust as high as 40 mph this afternoon. However, we can anticipate mostly clear skies during this time. With highs reaching the mid-40s to low-50s, the skies will clear up again by tomorrow afternoon.

Spring is Around the Corner

As we look ahead, Tuesday will mark the official start of spring, with highs hovering around 60 degrees. The warming trend will persist for one more day. Therefore, it is advisable to make the most of the pleasant weather while it lasts.

However, there will be changes in Siouxland. The midweek lows will be in the low 50s, and by early next week, the low 40s are possible. A period of unpredictability extends into next weekend, which may bring additional precipitation. There are chances of rain and snow starting as early as Thursday.

In conclusion, as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in 2024, it marks the end of an extended period of above-average temperatures. While today may be chilly and cloudy, we can look forward to the official start of spring and a warming trend in the coming days. However, it is important to be prepared for changes in the weather, with the possibility of rain and snow in the forecast. Enjoy the transition to spring and make the most of the changing seasons in Siouxland!
